Once upon a time, this was the ancient Egyptian capital of Thebes. For 500 years, it was the epicentre of Egypt’s New Kingdom, where some of history’s most renowned pharaohs commissioned the most impressive architectural feats of the age. Today, this city in Upper Egypt is one of the country’s top destinations, and one of the best places to explore New Kingdom history.

Here it’s all about temples and tombs. On the East Bank, in downtown Luxor, you’ll find the grand temples in what was once the beating heart of Thebes. Cross the Nile to the West Bank and you’ll find the vast Theban Necropolis, where New Kingdom pharaohs were buried for hundreds of years alongside their mortuary temples and monuments.
